Picard's Flute

This may seem so hurried
won't you hear me out?
These overwhelming things I feel
seem so very real when I'm with you
I know I could let go of the
past and these doubts
You've inspired this change in me
so now won't you tell me this can be?
You just might be
the very death of me
but who's to say that wasn't what I needed
We just might be
exactly where we're meant to be
to see what we need to see
When the heart don’t get its way
the lessons that it takes away
will make it beat so strong again
This old me could not see the possibility
of having what I want
and getting what I need
from the same being
Self-imposed limits only I could see
were never really helping me
now you've come
to finally set me free.
You just might be
the very death of me
but who's to say that isn't what I need
We just might be exactly where we're meant to be
to see what we need to see
When the heart don’t get its way
the lessons that it takes away
will make it beat so strong again

Nation
04:17
|

This nation that you speak of when you reminisce
is just a twisted memory
of a time you couldn’t see the wrong
all along
Rewritten… an entire people’s history
replete with pretty pictures
guaranteed to keep you in your seats
while it all repeats
The truth of everything
you needed to see
could make you disbelieve
what they're trying to feed
You’ve taken
the words you claim to hold so dear
and twisted them around until
they betray the ones they’re mean to heal
and to shield
Mistaken for a criminal when just a child
then judged and executed
all before the blue eyes of the law
the heart’s left raw
And the truth is everything
that they're saying can't be
so question everything
find the truth that you seek
All nations sit on either side or in between
of lines drawn up by people
unable to see what draws us near
out of fear
Complacent… it's the perfect state to keep us in
how long will we all let them
oh where will we finally draw the line
or is this fine?

Comeback Kid

Slipping the rope
we will Bob and weave
maybe land one
Before he hits me
No corner-man
I’m overmatched
swinging wild
nearly off my feet
Another round
while he pummels me
sound of the crowd
is so deafening
I hit the floor
they’re screaming “more!”
up again
can’t accept defeat
And I can bring you back again
once you’ve had a taste
the sting will not erase
no matter what you believe
Holding out hope
for a brief reprieve
fighting the reflex
to retreat
I never saw
that old south paw
laid out flat
blinking at his feet
Beyond the ring where
my guard remains
behaving as I was
trained
Would I pass it on
if I had a son?
would I struggle
to refrain?
And I can bring you back again
once you’ve had a taste
the sting will not erase
no matter what you believe

Building Fifty

Down the long white hall
into the common room
you ask for cigarettes
and the clothes I brought for you
you say "I don't mind the uniforms,
but they're not the same.”
and I know you think
I'm busy placing blame
They never asked for your surrender
but white flag’s flying high
Oh how I wish I could defend you
from all the demons inside
Off from group at six
sneak a quick smoke break
contemplate you day
see how much you can take
No they can't prescribe
just what you need
to take back your life
and reclaim the day
from the grip of night
No you can't escape
thoughts you think at night
scratch away the skin
knuckles turning white
You say you only do this for
a bit of control
over what is left
of this tattered soul
They never asked for your surrender
but white flag's flying high
Oh how I wish I could defend you
from the demons inside
I accept of me the faults and complexity
that make me who I am
And someday you will see
this world so differently
now please take my hand.
I think you know that we’ll survive this tragedy
just like we always do
Because so far as I can see
you are a part of me
and i'm a part of you.

St. James Place

Four weeks in town
she would never expect
pushed to the ground
with dirty hands around her neck
something she never thought she’d see
a part of her history
I started to call
warn you to stay inside
in your part of town
there’d been this violent crime
but I stopped short of dialing you
because of something that I hold true
You shouldn't have to hide yourself
so you can walk alone at night
and a smile by itself
isn't always an invite
I cannot imagine myself
ever having to worry
What would this life be like if
neither side saw these lines as blurry?
What do you say we behave as equals starting today?
Would it play in a world where we can barely communicate?
To see the world through
those eyes for a moment
to see a world full of eyes
scanning over me
What do you say?
What do you say?
Is the world finally ready to make a change?
Watching the news
it’s everything you’d expect
words that they choose
the images they select
paint a picture of someone who
may have deserved it… sad but true
We’ve a long way to go
as society course-corrects
may these times give us pause
temper our base reflex
so we’ll finally learn to see…

Take it Over
03:15
|
|||
I don't know why I didn't say
what I was thinking that day
no I can't lie I was afraid
what you might say
Let’s all take it over again
maybe say the right thing and then
we’d never let that evening
end that way
You won't believe how hard I tried
I'd have never found my softer side
if not for you
I don't know what I could say
to take these feelings away
these haven't been our finest days
now you’re begging me to stay
Let’s all take it over again
maybe say the right thing and then
we’d never let that evening
end that way
You'll never know how hard I cried
believing that this love had died
but not for you
I don’t know why people say
when they are feeling this way
they'll live to fight another day
Who lives for fighting anyway?
Let’s all take it over again
maybe say the right thing and then
we’d never have to let that evening
end that way
Let's both forgive those stupid lies
and see this through each other’s eyes
I'm all for you
